Do You Want to Dance?

Do you have what it takes? If so, we are looking for a few good men and women to be the first to join the new Pioneer Dance Squad.

Pioneer Dance Squad Tryouts will be held October 13, 2007 in the Pickel Bldg, Rm 130A. The schedule will be as follows: 10-12 Clinic, 12-1 Break, 1-3 Tryouts. Please come prepared to perform your own 60-90 second routine to Lloyd’s “Get It Shawty” Remix version with Missy Elliot and Yung Joc. You must call to reserve your spot to tryout. Tips for Online Classes

Have you been considering taking an online class? Scott from the Advising Center has a few tips to make sure you get off to a good start:

I’ve registered for an online class, now what?
OK, so you have just registered for online classes—now you need to make plans to purchase your textbooks. A good estimate as to the cost of books is this: books typically cost about 30% of your tuition (about $400). Plan ahead to have monies set aside so you are not caught waiting on a check from Financial Aid, this could cause even more delays and you will get further behind in your coursework. You also need to allow time for the books to be delivered to you. If you sign up for RODP courses, you have to order your books through the RODP website—so be sure to allow time for shipping.

First day of classes, now what?
Log in – online class attendance begins the first day of classes.
Prepare a notebook—print the syllabus, calendar, assignments—get organized so
you don’t miss important deadlines.
“Walk around the class”—not really, but click on all the links and make sure you
have access to them; become familiar with the email and discussion
boards. Double-check to make sure all course requirements are clear, if
you notice something odd/unusual, contact the instructor immediately.
Stay active—log in daily to check for any updates from the professor. When
things get tough and you feel the pressure of an impending due date for an
assignment, you may be tempted not to log in. It is still important to check in” just to make sure you’re still on track.
There aren’t any stupid questions---post your questions on the discussion board—
read responses to other discussion questions—valuable information can be found here.

Make a Video and Enter the Contest!

You see homemade videos everywhere these days. They can be funny, they can be serious and sometimes they can be just plain weird. We're looking for Your Take on life here at Vol State, so we're having our second annual Student Video Contest. It's a chance to show off your creativity and get in the running for some cool prizes. We're giving away an 8gb iPod Shuffle to the winner, and iPod Shuffle for second place and a $50 Vol State Bookstore gift card for third place.

The videos can be about anything you would like. It just needs to tie into Vol State. Get creative and don't worry about what we're looking for...we want to get Your Take.

We have another action packed week here for student activities at Vol State. It's Cultural Diversity Week and we have a number of speakers on campus. All of the speakers will be at 12:15pm each day in the Rochelle Center of the Library.

A Fall Festival Celebrating Latino Culture. It runs from 11am-3pm on the Vol State campus on the Library Lawn, in the Plaza and in the gym.

Everyone in the community is invited for:
-Fajitas, chips, rice and beans
-Tango and Bossa Nova from the critically acclaimed Nashville Latin band Serenatta Romantic Latin Ensemble
-Soccer Contest: Teams of five participate in mini-games. Anyone can enter. Prizes for the winners.
-Dance from the Hispano America Dance Troupe
-Community booths and info tables
-Fun games and rides for kids

Busy week on campus

Get ready for a busy week on campus! We have a bunch of interesting things going on for students. First off, don't miss the Fall Fling celebration in the plaza area on Wednesday, September 19th. It's a great way to find out about all the student clubs and organizations on campus. They'll have tables set up, so you can talk to people about whatever group interests you. There's plenty to do here on campus, you just have to get involved. Fall Fling runs from 10am until 1:30pm.
The Fall Job Career Fair is also on Wednesday. It takes place in the gym from 10am to 2pm. More than fifty employers will be on hand to talk to students about full time and part time positions. It's a good way to meet people if you are looking for a job. Don't forget to bring your resume!

The Red Cross is taking blood donations on campus Wednesday, September 19th from 8am to 2pm. The Bloodmobile will be parked in the lot behind the Wood Campus Center.

And finally, if you need to relax, take in Movies by Starlight. We set up a giant projection screen and sound system and show movies out on the library lawn. This Friday, September 21 we'll be showing Shrek 3 and Spiderman 3. The first movie will start at dusk (about 7:30pm). The best part of all: it's free! There will be some refreshments for sale. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and feel free to bring the kids. The public is welcome to this family event.

Say Hello

You should be running into plenty of people younger and older than you in class and around campus. The average age of a Vol State student is 25. Students, faculty and staff represent several generations. There are students still in high school that are on campus for ACT prep or to take a campus tour. There are senior adults attending for-credit and Continuing Education classes. I know we can’t really ask each other – how old are you? But, say HI to everyone and share a SMILE!

Check out the new Settler Website

Veterinary program in the works for Vol State sounds like an interesting story, right? Well, you can check it out in the latest edition of the "Settler", the Vol State student newspaper.

New students may be seeing the "Settler" for the first time. It's an award-winning publication that has a reputation for breaking news on campus. Now, they have a new website. You can find all of the stories from the print version, and a bunch of interactive features including chat and a search mechanism. It also has stories from other college papers across the area. The student Editor, Rob Spires, tells me he hopes to be adding new content, in between issues, on a regular basis. I'm personally looking forward to their first breaking news story.
