Come see "Fiddler on the Roof" this weekend!

For the next 3 days, the Music and Theater departments will be performing "Fiddler on the Roof" in the Weymss Auditorium in the Caudil Building. There will be a $5 suggested donation at the door, and the show starts at 7:30pm. On Sunday, March 29th, the show will begin at 2:30pm.

A quick synopsis from Wikipedia for 'Fiddler on the Roof', "The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. He must cope with both the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters—each daughter's choice of husband moves progressively further away from established customs—and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village."

It's free for Vol State students, faculty, and staff.

Give a speech. Win $100, $75, $50 and a plaque. How easy is that?

If you love giving speeches, then you might want to think about participating in the annual Hal R. Ramer Oratorical Contest. This year, the contest will be held on April 6th at 12:15pm in Weymss Auditorium in Caudil Building.

"The idea is that we find the best student speakers from across campus, these are students that have been recommended by the instructors to apply for the contest, or students who apply on their own. And we have this public speaking contest in the auditorium in front of a big crowd of people, and we'll have outside judge that come from off campus, then students will give a speech and then they're evalutated. Then the best ones win money," said Chair of the Communications Department, Len Assante.

Any student, part or full time, can enter in the contest.

The judges for this year's contest will be Sumner County Executive Anthony Holt and State Representative for the 45th District, Debra Maggart.

"Usually we have about 4 or 5 students, but this year I've been contacted by 10 or 12 students asking for more information," said Judi Truitt. "The deadline is the 31st [of March]."

Did I mention there's money up for grabs? If you win first place, you'll receive $100 and your name on a plaque across the hall from the Humanities Division Office. Second place winners receive $75 and a wall plaque. Third place winners receive $50 cash and a wall plaque.

Here's a link to the contest rules.

So, interested in participating in the oratorical contest? Contact Judi Truitt or Len Assante for more info.

Vol State Basketball Try-Outs

Volunteer State will be hosting open tryout days on March 21 and April 4 from 1:00 till 5:00 pm. These workouts are open to all high school seniors looking for an opportunity to play collegiate basketball. VSCC is located just out of Nashville, TN in the town of Gallatin.

In the just completed season the Lady Pioneers went 27-4 and were ranked #15 in the nation in the final NJCAA DI poll and lost in the TJCCAA Conference Championship game while having three players named all-conference including the 2009 player of the year. Our players are heavily recruited by four year schools from DI down throughout the South and Midwest so this is a great opportunity for exposure.

Whoa, that's a car?

Carol Topping is an Associate Professor of Social Sciences. She's also a proud owner of a SmartCar, a Daimler Chrysler brand of super compact vehicles.

I sat down and talked to Carol Topping about her interesting little set of wheels.

I first asked her what interested her in such a small car, "The first time I thought that would be the perfect size for me because I'm always by myself. With all the other vehicles I've had, I've always had a lot of extra room that was wasted."

She told me that before she drove the SmartCar, she drove a LandRover and a RAV4 Toyota SUV. "I've been trying to downsize," she added. "At first I ordered a black one, but then I was worried that people wouldn't be able to see me. I switched and ordered a yellow one."

"They're very reasonable priced," she said. So, how much does one cost? According to the SmartCar USA website, the basic models start at around $11,000. The higher end versions start around $18,000. Not bad when you compare a 2009 Honda Civic starting around $15,000, or a 2009 Toyota Corolla for the same price.

The second question on everyone's mind when you talk about vehicles is gas mileage. So I asked her and she answered, "The other night I got 52 miles to the gallon.... It's been down to 34 back a few weeks ago when the wind was bad... But it's usually between 45-50."

When asked about how the car handles, she said it's just like any small car; when the wind picks up, the wind feels like it's pushing the car sideways. She also added that the wheel base is so small than when you hit a bump or a pot hole, you can feel it. "But I'm not use to comfort in my car so bumps just don't bother me or wrestling with the wind doesn't bother me. Other than that, it's really speedy and picks up fast. It's a lot of fun to drive."
