Vol State Open Monday - Use Discretion for Travel

Update: Campus is now closing Monday...see the message above for details

Volunteer State Community College at Gallatin and Livingston will be open Monday. However, we are asking that students, faculty and staff use their own discretion to decide whether or not it is safe to travel to campus. We know that many people are dealing with flooding at home or may have roadway flooding blocking their way to campus. Contact your instructor ASAP if you will be unable to make it to campus for a final exam. They will help you reschedule that exam. The best way to contact them is via e-mail. For a listing of all instructors visit http://www.volstate.edu/ and look up at the top of the screen. You'll see a tab that says "People Finder". Off-campus sites will be open depending if the site itself is open. Check local TV news listings to see if your school location will be open. Many counties and cities have closed schools Monday. If that is the case for your off-campus site, please contact the instructor to reschedule a final exam.

How are certain teachers or even students able to check their emails when there are thousands of power outages????

Make contact as soon as you are able...if people have power out that will be taken into account. Once you have the ability to communicate with your instructor do so and once instructors have the ability to communicate they will check e-mails and respond.

I hope someone there realizes that gallatin road within 1 mile of the school is more than 50% blocked with water??

How come Vol State is still going to be open when MTSU, Belmont, Cumberland and other colleges around us are out? Especially with everyone having to commute to Vol State from all over Tennessee... This is absurd... Do you all not understand how dangerous it is out there? The mayor and governor are telling people not to leave the house! WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT PICTURE??!?!?

This is utterly ridiculous for Vol State to remain open - almost all avenues to Gallatin and Hendersonville are closed, flooding is everywhere! There are water shortages, students displaced from their homes, and every other college around this area has closed, and THOSE students live on campus! What are the people in charge at Vol State thinking??

i just don't get it..OFFICIALS have said if you don't have to get out on the roads, DON'T..i simply don't understand why Vol State doesn't cancel classes on one of the most historic weather events in Tennessee history..Roads are inpassable, pooling of water on roadways with a threat of hydroplaning is a concern, rain is STILL COMING DOWN..C'mon, Volstate..just cancel class for Monday..people need to re-group..Finals can wait one more day..getting killed coming to class to take them can't.

Why? Seriously Vol. State think just a little

Come on people. Let's not be too critical on the vol state staff. I know I am planning on sailing my home to school in order to take those finals. Little bit of water never hurt anyone... well, except those people that got hurt or died.

This is an outrage. State officials have said that people need to stay home tomorrow. I honestly feel like Vol State does not care about its students or staff. Major colleges have closed and there students mostly live on campus. Vol State is a commuting school. How can you tell students to use discretion and then contact there teachers if they can't make it. Why don't you just cancel class and save everybody the trouble and be smart about this. I honestly hope that a student is not killed trying to drive to Vol State to take a final when it could have been postponed.

I cannot believe the school is going to be open tomorrow! I know that finals are this week but how much thought was really given to this? Both routes that I have to the school are blocked, and I live in Madison. I really hope people use their better judgment and stay home if they cannot make it over the roads that are flooded. Not to mention that I have kids and I have no one to watch them because everyone is stuck at home.

This is crazy. Vol State is being ridiculous. Some poor student will be killed trying to drive to Vol State to take a final when it could have been prevented. Why dont you just cancel school like all of the other colleges. I mean most of there students live on campus. This is obsurd. Just cancel class and make everything easier on everybody. I mean if the governor says to stay home, then that should be saying something to you to close school for one day. I attend Vol State to recieve an education. I think whoever is incharge of Vol State should consider going back to school to recive a little more education on rational thoughts and decisions.

I live in white house...and every route for me to even get CLOSE to VSCC is blocked and closed off...There is no way for me to get there...and I cant get ahold of my teacher(whom I have been emailing all day with no response)...so this is complete b.s...this is REDICULOUS...we are obviously just another number putting dollar signs in their account and they dont care about their "paychecks" risking their lives for an exam...I am livid.

Over half of the teachers I've had while at Vol State never used their email, and even said in the first class meeting that they didn't know how/didn't care to use the email. How are we suppose to tell teachers we are not able to make it if they don't even know how to check the email, or just don't check it.

I totally agree with the comments questioning Vol State's decision to open tomorrow. Even colleges which almost never close and have the majority of their students living on campus are closed tomorrow. Whomever it was who decided to keep Vol State open is irresponsible and doesn't care about the safety of students.

They're open because the president is DENSE. Like back in janurary when the snow storm came through he didn't close campus till 11am the day of the storm. Obviously an effort is going to have to be made to reschedule exams for some students. Why not just put all exams off so ALL the proffesors and students can take care of anything they have to this week in regards to the flooding. The roads are so bad near my house that one actually fissured and lifted up it was under water for so long. I mean SERIOUSLY???

It doesn't matter. Apparently its just business to them. As long as they don't loose money for being closed one day, its all ok. Their way of getting out of it was that "come at your own discretion" bull. Volstate, obviously you aren't going to change your mind, but some forethought in the future would be nice. Did it occur to you that some people may try to leave anyway to "get finals out of the way" and potentially risk their life because you don't know when to decide when school closes? How about the time when the whole parking lot was covered in snow with a layer of ice under it? I spent all afternoon helping people get out because of the slope on the parking lot. Good call Volstate... good call.

It doesn't matter. They got by with "use your own discretion" without considering the fact that some people might be dumb enough to try to go to get it out of the way.

The powers that be at the vol state community college need to seriously re-think their policy on closings. waiting till the last minute when some students and faculty have more than an hour drive is obsured.maybe some pressure from higher up will get their attention.seriously people, you are supposed to have brains if you are in charge of a college.

notice that volstate is not replying to the critical comments. They know they screwed up.....again
