Santa and one of his elves were spotted giving gifts to children on the Vol State Campus last week. This was an annual event sponsored by the Student Government Association (SGA). Various students who are facing hardships brought their little ones down to kick-off the holiday season.
Lori Miller from the Student Life and Diversity Office was part of the team. “Some of the parents that have been involved in the past said this was the best turnout we have ever had. When I was a student here, my kids actually benefited from this event. It was really rewarding, since this time I got to give back to the community and see it come full circle.”
Maggie Lewis with the Association of Campus Events (ACE) helped with the registration of 140 children. “I worked with Christmas for the Kids last year also,” said Lewis. “They get so excited. It was well worth the work I put into it. Just to make one child happy would have been worth it.”
“Jazmin Mercer was the chairperson for this event and dressed up as an elf,” said Miller. “She did such a great job it literally brought tears to people’s eyes when she worked with the kids”
Activities for the children included pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus. The kids did arts and crafts, played board games and took part in face painting. The party lasted about three hours and both the parents and the children left with the Christmas spirit.
