Education Students Work with Kids in the Community

Vol State students in Penny Duncan’s Education 2080 class participated in a Service Learning Project this week. College Heights Community Childcare (CHCC) hosted the Language & Literacy class as they trained parents and staff on the “Books from Birth” reading method. Books from Birth is a Family Literacy Program from Vanderbilt University.

A representative from Vanderbilt visited the Language & Literacy class a week prior to the training to introduce the program and train the students on the C.A.R. diagnostic reading method.  Each section of the training was assigned to a student.  The students prepared for the training by reviewing the content, setting up the materials and role playing each part. The students arrived early to set up the environment.

Parents and teachers from CHCC took advantage of the opportunity to learn how to make reading more meaningful.  They also received goody bags and door prizes.  Books from Birth oversee the Imagination Library program from Dolly Parton for Middle Tennessee.

HCC is one of the three local child care centers partnered with Volunteer State Community College to provide ongoing education to child care providers.  Over-all the project went well and the students participated in an awesome service learning experience!
